Delighted Tobehere’s SWEET 16…AND THEN SOME!

Delighted Tobehere’s SWEET 16…AND THEN SOME!

Once Upon A Time…there was a handsome prince and a beautiful queen…and they were the same person. In true storybook form we’re going to be celebrating the storied life of Delighted Tobehere and all of the magical people she has met along the way in Wonderland!

Yes, friends, “16 going on 17” is a tale as old as time…or at least 40 years. So we’ll just call it Delighted Tobehere’s SWEET 16…AND THEN SOME!

This THREE night event will be a tell-all that you won’t want to miss! Delighted Tobehere, a Greenville native and Drag Superstar, is an internationally celebrated, award winning entertainer with a wide vocal range, quick wit, and southern charm. She was featured on America’s Got Talent, receiving four “Yes” votes from the judges, with Howard Stern exclaiming “I loved the entire performance!” But now she is taking this show back home, to her roots, to talk about her journey from growing up right here in Greenville, to her first drag performance, to her time in NYC, and back home again.

Delighted’s Sweet 16 and Then Some is a perfect show to get to know our local star, or as an introduction to the world of drag, or just to have a good time! Delighted is taking to the stage at Cafe and Then Some to present a brand new show, Delighted’s Sweet 16 and Then Some, June 9th through June 11th at 8pm. The celebration begins with a birthday dinner and drink at 6:30pm prior to the show!

Paper Bullets

Paper Bullets

Jeffrey Jackson simply describes his latest book as “a World War II story you’ve never heard before.” It’s a story that’s being heralded for how it documents courage and inspires. It’s about love. It’s also an example of empathy.

“Paper Bullets” offers a ground-level view of history through the story of Lucy Schwob and Suzanne Malherbe. They were avant-garde artists, stepsisters and lesbian partners who risked their lives while defying the Nazis.

Jackson is going to discuss the book with Wofford College students and others participating in a Zoom discussion at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 8. The event is being hosted by the LGBTerriers and the Wofford College Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

POSTPONED: The 2nd Annual Rainbow Ball

UPDATE: Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the UPLIFT Outreach Center has elected to reschedule the 2nd Annual Rainbow Ball slated for Saturday, May 2nd, 2020 at the 1881 Event Hall. The revised date is now Saturday, September 26, 2020 from 7 PM to 11 PM.

Tickets are available for the 2nd Annual Rainbow Ball! Join us on Saturday, September 26, 2020, to support the Uplift Outreach Center!

Visit http://rainbowballupstate.com for sponsor information!

The Spartanburg chapter of PFLAG is hosting the Uplift Outreach Center this year as they await their 501c3 status. The organizations are planning the 2nd Annual Rainbow Ball. The fundraiser is the center’s largest source of funding and an integral part of Uplift’s continued growth.

The Rainbow Ball is a masquerade gala that will create a space where donors can socialize and support a cause that is very important to Spartanburg and the entire Upstate.

The 2nd Annual Rainbow Ball is scheduled for Saturday, May 2nd at the 1881 Event Hall (formerly Summit Pointe). Jamarcus Gaston and the Synergy Twins will be returning as honorary emcee and primary entertainment. The event will also feature a DJ, cash bar and heavy hor d'oeuvres.

Last year’s Rainbow Ball raised over $13,000 and was essential in the launch and opening of the youth LGBTQ+ center September 2019. This year’s goal of $25,000 will provide future programming, snacks, beverages and rent to allow the center to continue and grow.

The center runs solely on donations and volunteers and is housed within the Fernwood Baptist Church at Hillcrest. The vision for the center is to eventually have its own facilities where it may provide space for additional services including mental health, STD and HIV testing, medical screenings and expanded programming for LGBTQ+ youth and adults.

Pride Night Out at the Peace Center: San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus

Come on out to the Peace Center and join us for our first Upstate Pride Night Out of 2020. On Monday, March 9 the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus will be in concert and featuring during the evening, our very own Greenville Gay Men’s Choir.

Using code PRIDE you can secure tickets and receive up to $10 off to enjoy this amazing chorus at this special performance outside of San Francisco. We will be in Genevieve’s Theatre Lounge before, where you can order a bite to eat, a drink and socialize.

For more than 40 years, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus (SFGMC) has served as an international standard bearer for a powerful mix of extraordinary musical excellence and mission-driven activism. Founded in 1978, it was the first choral organization to courageously proclaim its orientation in its name and is credited with helping start the LGBTQ choral movement that now spans the entire globe, galvanizing and changing the course of LGBTQ history. The chorus continues to inspire other arts-based community organizations through its performances and involvement in human rights, community activism, empowerment, and inclusiveness, establishing it as an icon among LGBTQ organizations.

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Dr. Timothy Seelig, SFGMC has established a heightened level of performance standards, bringing renewed audience and choral industry acclaim. Recent touring schedules, recordings, and outreach programs have broadened its impact and reputation in the community while maintaining its signature blend of humor, personality, and ground-breaking performances. In 2019, SFGMC acquired a new facility that has become its permanent home for rehearsals and offices. The building serves as the first-ever National LGBTQ Center for the Arts and a community space for San Francisco LGBTQ artists.

The story of “internationally ignored song stylist” Hedwig, a fourth-wall smashing East German rock & roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation.

This outrageous and unexpectedly hilarious story is dazzlingly performed by Hedwig in the form of a concert gig/stand-up comedy routine backed by the hard-rocking band “The Angry Inch.” Hedwig describes her life’s search for “The Origin of Love” and her other half. It’s a rocking, funny, touching, and ultimately inspiring ride to anyone who has felt life gave them an inch when they deserved a mile.

Starring Clay Smith (aka Delighted Tobehere) and Miranda Barnett.

Drag Queen Story Hour 3: Celebrating Black History Month

  • Unitarian Universalist Church of Spartanburg (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

A new Drag Queen Story Hour is coming to the Upstate!

Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) is an event for drag entertainers to share books and stories with children in libraries, schools, and bookstores. DQSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive role models. In spaces like this, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish, where dress up is real.

We are celebrating Black History Month with reading by three of our favorite Drag entertainers, who will showcase stories of African/African American heritage, beauty, and excellence.

The event is free, but you do need a ticket. Do so in the link above!
